Honoring a Pioneer in Global Health
Sir Andy Haines’ award of the Tyler Prize was celebrated with an award ceremony in April 2022. Sir Andy received the 2022 Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement at a time when the world was still emerging from the COVID-19 pandemic. With public health concerns still high and international travel complicated by ongoing Omicron variants, Haines made the decision not to travel, citing both health and climate considerations — values deeply reflected in his life’s work.
In lieu of a formal ceremony in Los Angeles, the Tyler Prize Committee marked the award with a low-key celebration in Haines home city of London, UK— fitting for a Laureate whose work calls for restraint, responsibility, and long-term thinking in the face of planetary risk.
